Professor Awarded Distingushed Service Medal for Operations Research

Emeritus Professor Theodor Stewart has been awarded the EURO Distinguished Service Medal by the European Association of Operational Research Societies (EURO). This prestigious award is for recognition of distinguished service to EURO specifically and to the profession of operations research in general, and was bestowed on Prof Stewart at the opening ceremony of the XXVI EURO Conference in Rome on 1 July 2013. Prof Stewart is the first South African to be honoured in this way.

This follows the dedication of the January-June 2013 issue of ORiON - the Journal of the Operational Research Society of South Africa - to Prof Stewart, on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Each of the 7 published papers (2 from colleagues in the Department of Statistical Sciences) contain a personal dedication to Prof Stewart. A longer dedication written by ORSSA president Jan van Vuuren records Prof Stewart’s biography, achievements and contributions to operational research theory and practice. Prof Stewart is only the second person to be honoured in this way.
